Making real money in “Virtual Reality”

Posted By Afif Fattouh on September 21st, 2009

The concept of making money as commonly known relies entirely on having a job, a real job! Whether it consists of sitting behind a desk, selling goods or working the muscles out like a builder does, the job is real because it exists in the real world.

Then the Internet came along, and a whole new economy emerged as a result of this vast pool of entrepreneurs, corporates and regular “online surfers” like you and me. In the process, e-commerce websites took over the merchandise trading activities, like Amazon and Ebay. We then witnessed the sky-rocketing popularity of online advertising that turned Search Engines into giant cash makers.

Moving on to what they call “Virtual Reality”, watching a movies is.. well, quite real, and so is playing video games in the living room. Now lets throw in the Internet into the equation, and there it is, users from all over the world can interact through games in three-dimensional Internet-based worlds thanks to recent advances in video game technology. Virtual reality is born.

Now lets pause our thoughts for a moment, what does this all have to do with making money?
As the popularity and sophistication of online games has skyrocketed, enterprising gamers have found ways to make real money playing them, to the point where experts say that it has become common to run across gamers who make their entire income with virtual jobs. Gamers mine virtual worlds for currency, build virtual real estate empires and even sell their virtual bodies—all in the name of real-world profit.

Game developers have reacted in various ways to the phenomena of people earning their livings on their servers. In May, Blizzard, the publisher of World of Warcraft, banned over 30,000 gamers who were using automated processes to harvest gold, and removed over 30 million gold pieces ($4,048,582, according to GameUSD.com’s latest exchange rate) from the game’s economy. Sony, on the other hand, recently opened Station Exchange, an online marketplace where EverQuest II gamers can buy, sell and trade currency and items. Second Life, a comparatively small MMORPG, has an official currency exchange Web site and a boutique where users can buy computer hardware and other real-world commodities for Linden dollars, the game’s in-world currency.

What a web site you’ve right here. You have a real knack for making a blog readable and easy about the eyes. Some websites appear like train wrecks, but not this one – it’s a pleasure to read. Don’t have time for you to study all of the content articles right here, I found your site while searching for something else on Yahoo. But I’ve bookmarked your homepage and will go to it frequently to study what’s new
